Beach Biking Weekend August 28-30, 2020
Camp at False Cape State Park, a wild and fascinating place accessible only by bicycle, boat, or foot. Nestled between Back Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, False Cape State Park is one of the last remaining undeveloped areas along the Atlantic coast. As the former home of Native Americans, the historic Wash Woods community and Little Island Coast Guard Station, False Cape honors the hardy souls who made a living from the sea.
(The photo above with our hot pink tents shows the campsite.) On Saturday, tour up to 25 miles on bicycle, and discover traces of native Americans and early settlers, including the historic Wash Woods Community. Enjoy popsicles on rocking chairs at the only museum and gift shop you'll find, (incredibly) in the middle of the woods. (pending the opening after Covid closures) Participants will need a bicycle, (in good working order), helmet, and basic fitness, as they will travel 4.5 miles to camp carrying their personal gear (including sleeping bag and clothes) on bicycles through the barrier islands of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. (bike racks/bags are recommended). This is a backpacking trip on a bike. The leaders will haul all tents and cooking gear only. The bikes will need to have either a basket or rack on the back to secure their gear. Wearing a backpack while on a bike isn't the easiest thing to do and is not recommended. We will visit the beach and collect seashells to make a craft Saturday night. Enjoy a backpacker-style BBQ by the Bay as the sun sets, and play night games. STRICT LIMIT OF 12 PEOPLE FOR THIS TRIP and girls have priority! Cost. $25 per person includes:
Food. This is a backpacking style trip, so breakfast both days and lunch on Saturday is up to each participant. We will provide a BBQ chicken dinner on Saturday. We are not allowed to have fire in the park, but we will have a small stove and Jetboils for the girls to use. Spending money. There is a lovely gift shop with souvenirs and ice cream. Spending money is at your discretion. We will stop for pizza and ice cream at Pungo Pizza on the way home if you care to join us (optional). Departure. Meet at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge at 4 pm to unload and shuttle cars. Departing on bikes by 4:45 pm. This time is very strict as we MUST be off the Refuge by sundown and we must pass thru the Refuge to get to the State Park. We will get fined if we aren't off the refuge by sundown. Return. We will arrive back in the parking lot by noon on Sunday. After registering, please pay here:
